Shadow and Bone - Thoroughly Enjoyable

I just finished watching Season 1 of the Shadow and Bone series and wanted to write a short note on this pleasant experience.

The series takes the best from all the genres it handles while avoiding the label of a fantasy clone. Does it bring anything new to the fantasy genre? Perhaps not, but it successfully finds the right mix of what works.

It tells a tale set in a fantasy world that resembles early 20th century Russia, which was cut in half by a swath of shadow by a shadow summoner. Legend has it that one day a saint - a sun summoner, shall appear to drive away the darkness and reunite the nation. While anchored on a stereotypical "The Chosen One" concept, the series is kept fresh by a healthy mix of steampunk, element-benders and classic romance expected from young-adult fiction. Also, the special effects are spectacular.

With a little more balance to the two main story lines (and an additional sub-plot) and better character development, Shadow and Bone can easily become an iconic Netflix series.

The show would equally appeal to a generation who grew up reading fantasy series like the Belgariad or Wheel of Time, as well as to people who were introduced to fantasy through Vampire Diaries and Twilight.

If you like fantasy, its worth watching.
