In a welcome change to the current race balance in casting roles predominantly played by white males, Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) will be taking up the mantle of Agent-007 in the upcoming Bond-25 movie. James Bond will be played by Daniel Craig for the last time. As per reports by The Guardian, James Bond has left active service in the beginning of the movie and is enjoying a quiet vacation in Jamaica when he is called back for a case. Lashana Lynch will be playing the role of the current Agent-007.
Whether this decision is a win for women of colour can be confirmed only after the movie comes out. The internet is still ablaze with the questions of who would play the next Bond after Bond-25. While it would be interesting to see the older Bond mentoring the current Agent-007, it is very easy for the script to slip into tropes like the White Savior and 'mansplaining'. The character doesn't exactly have an immaculate record when it comes to portraying gender relations in cinema. I guess we will have to wait till April 2020 to find out.
