After being enthralled by the Netflix series Haunting of Hill House, I wanted to check out the other works of Mike Flanagan. His filmography isn't that extensive, about six or seven movies that defines his body of work. From what I've seen and enjoyed from Haunting of Hill House, I expected him to have a few common creative elements in his work, much like any director worth his salt. Flanagan uses recurring actors for his characters, works on the horror/thriller genre consistently and refrains from using played out gimmicks like jump scares in his work. Ouija : Origin of Evil is no different. Making a critically successful sequel to a critically panned movie is no mean task. Annalise Baso, Elizabeth Reaser and Lulu Wilson (recurring cast members from his other works) transforms this movie, that otherwise could have been just another campy horror flick, into a meditative, atmospheric and satisfying film. I would recommend this to all the horror fans out there who are tired of the same old propaganda-driven Annabelle clones.
